EPF Transfer Delayed? Update Your Date of Exit Online Through the UAN Portal

Changing jobs can leave employees with more than one EPF member ID linked to the same Universal Account Number, or UAN. The balance associated with the previous employment can generally be transferred to the latest member account, helping the employee maintain a consolidated provident fund record.
However, an EPF transfer request may get delayed when the former employer has not entered the employee’s Date of Exit in the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation records. The missing entry can affect online transfers and certain withdrawal or pension-related services.
EPFO members do not always have to visit their previous employer to resolve this issue. If the required conditions are met, they can use the “Mark Exit” facility on the UAN Member Portal to submit the leaving date themselves.
Why is the Date of Exit important?
The Date of Exit records when an employee stopped working for a particular establishment. It closes the corresponding period of service in EPFO’s database and helps distinguish the previous employment from the current one.
A missing or incorrect exit date can create inconsistencies in the member’s service history. It may also cause difficulties while:
- Transferring an EPF balance to a new member ID
- Submitting an online withdrawal claim
- Verifying the total length of service
- Processing an Employees’ Pension Scheme claim
- Consolidating multiple PF records
- Correcting employment details
Employees should therefore review their EPFO service history after leaving a job, particularly if a transfer request remains pending.
When can an employee enter the Date of Exit?
The self-service facility is subject to certain conditions. A member can generally mark the exit only after two months have passed since the employer’s last EPF contribution.
The exit date selected by the member must fall within the month for which the previous employer made the final contribution. For example, if the last contribution relates to June, the system may permit the member to select an exit date falling within June. It should not be an arbitrary date from a different month.
Members should check their salary slips, resignation acceptance, relieving letter and last working-day communication before entering the information. Submitting an inaccurate date can create complications that may require a formal correction request later.
The UAN should also be active and the member’s Aadhaar-linked mobile number must be available for OTP authentication. EPFO’s portal currently advises members to protect their UAN credentials and use only official platforms for account-related services. EPFO UAN Member Portal
How to update the Date of Exit online
Eligible members can follow these steps:
- Visit the official EPFO Unified Member Portal.
- Sign in using the UAN, password and captcha displayed on the screen.
- Open the Manage menu on the dashboard.
- Select Mark Exit from the available options.
- Choose the PF member ID connected to the previous employer.
- Enter the correct Date of Exit. The date should match the employee’s records and fall within the permitted last-contribution month.
- Select the appropriate reason for leaving from the available list.
- Confirm the declaration displayed on the portal.
- Request an OTP and enter the code received on the mobile number linked with Aadhaar.
- Review the information carefully and submit the request.
Once the entry is successfully processed, the Date of Exit should appear in the member’s employment record. Members should save a screenshot or acknowledgement for future reference.
Portal menus or authentication requirements may change, so users should follow the instructions displayed on the official interface at the time of submission.
How to confirm that the update was successful
After completing the process, sign in again and open the View section. Select Service History to see the employment records linked to the UAN.
The previous employer’s entry should display details such as the member ID, date of joining and Date of Exit. Verify that the exit date is correct before initiating or resubmitting the EPF transfer request.
Members may also review their passbook to identify the month in which the previous establishment made its final contribution. EPFO provides an official online facility for checking contribution records and claim status. EPFO Member Passbook
Can a member correct an already recorded exit date?
The “Mark Exit” facility is primarily intended for cases where the Date of Exit is missing. A date that has already been recorded incorrectly cannot normally be replaced through the same option.
However, members may be able to seek correction through EPFO’s online Joint Declaration facility. This process is different from marking a missing exit. It requires supporting documents and may involve verification by the employer and approval by the relevant EPFO office.
The member can sign in to the UAN portal, open the Joint Declaration option and submit the requested correction with documentary evidence. Depending on the case, useful documents may include:
- Relieving or experience letter
- Resignation acceptance
- Last salary slip
- Full and final settlement record
- Employer-issued service certificate
- Attendance or wage records
- Any other document accepted by EPFO
EPFO’s Standard Operating Procedure allows correction requests involving the date and reason of leaving, subject to prescribed scrutiny and limits. The request ordinarily moves to the employer for verification before being processed by EPFO. EPFO Joint Declaration procedure
What if the former employer does not cooperate?
If the employer does not update the exit information or fails to process a correction request, the member can register a complaint through the Employees’ Provident Fund Grievance Management System, or EPFiGMS.
The grievance should clearly mention the UAN, previous member ID, establishment details and nature of the problem. Supporting documents can be attached to help EPFO examine the issue. Members should retain the grievance registration number to track the complaint.
EPFO says members, pensioners and employers can use the portal to register and monitor grievances. Its listed helpdesk number is 14470. EPFO grievance guidance
Avoid mistakes while using the portal
Members should not guess the exit date simply to complete a transfer. The entered date should agree with employment records and the final contribution month shown in the EPF passbook.
It is also important to select the correct member ID when multiple employments are linked to one UAN. A wrong submission could affect the service history or lead to additional verification.
Never share a UAN password, Aadhaar OTP, bank information or other confidential details with an agent or unknown caller. EPFO states that it does not call members to demand money or request sensitive personal information. Account updates should be performed only through official EPFO or government platforms.
Keeping the Date of Exit accurate can make EPF transfers and future claims easier. Employees should check their service history soon after leaving an organisation instead of waiting until they need to withdraw or transfer their retirement savings.
